Summary

William Barnes (1860-1930), surgeon, was born in Illinois. He was an amateur lepidopterist and assembled the largest private collection of butterflies in the country. Although Barnes did little scientific work himself, he employed a number of assistants who studied the collections. In 1922, the collection was sold to the United States National Museum, with the proceeds going to the hospital which Barnes had helped found.
