This composite photograph was created by Science Service and was based on original photographs distributed by the U.S. Government in 1945. The original caption for the Tolman photograph read: " Dr. Richard C. Tolman, of Washington, normally dean of the Graduate School of the California Institute of Technology, has served as a special adviser to Major General Leslie R. Groves, USA, Officer in Charge of the Manhattan Engineer District, in the development of the atomic bomb."
