Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter informing me that I have been elected a Resident Member of the Columbian Institute for the promotion of arts and sciences. I duly appreciate the honor conferred on me; but knowing the mediocrity of my talent, I feel rather diffident in accepting it and rely on the indulgence of it's members, to whom I will endeavor to prove, the interest I take in the success of that noble institution with sentiments of high respects and consideration.
