- The Naos Island Laboratories are located next to Panama City near the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. The laboratories contain an extensive seawater system for research on marine organisms, a well-equipped molecular biological research facility, and laboratories for both marine and archeological research. The laboratories are comprised of three adjacent buildings on an island connected to the mainland by a causeway. The Naos Marine Laboratory has operated at that site since 1968. The labs include molecular biology facilities for all aspects of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) work, including automated sequencing and microsatellite work. The Marine Environmental Assessment Study has been monitoring water quality and plankton production near the mouth of the canal since 1985. There are also small boats to allow access to the coast and islands in the Bay of Panama.
