This collection documents the Smithsonian-Venezuela Project that studied mammal-parasite-habitat relationships relating to disease vectors. The project was coordinated by V. J. Tipton and Charles O. Handley, curators of mammals, National Museum of Natural History. The idea for the project started with collections of mammals and ectoparasites in Panama associated with the Gorgas Memorial Laboratory, Middle America Research Unit, U.S. Army Malaria Control Unit, and the Smithsonian Institution. The project was entitled "Distribution and ecology of mammalian ectoparasites, arboviruses, and their hosts in Venezuela." The collection includes journals. The field groups included: (1965-1966) Group I - Norman E. Peterson (leader), Jim Flanigan, Chris Parrish, Martin L. Taylor, David G. Young; Group II - Merlin D. Tuttle (leader), Arden L. Tuttle, Claudette Tuttle; (1966-1967) Group I - Norman E. Peterson (leader), Daniel B. Peacock, Richard B. Peacock; Group II - Merlin D. Tuttle (leader), Fred L. Harder, Virginia E. Harder, Claudette H. Tuttle; (1967-1968) Group I - Norman E. Peterson (leader), Fred P. Brown, Jr., John O. Matson; Group II - Arden L. Tuttle (leader), Benjamin Inquilla, Ernest L. Stromeyer, Charlotte A. Tuttle. Also included are D. P. Furman, C. O. Handley Jr., C. L. Hayward, Carlos Machado, Carlos Naranjo, Juhani Ojasti, R. H. Pine, V. J. Tipton, and Conrad E. Yunker. The collection includes ectoparasite survey data sheets documenting insects found on mammal specimens. These are organized by specimen number and segmented in groupings of 100. They include a wide range of information not only about ectoparasites but also collecting methods and habitats. Sometimes United States National Museum (USNM) numbers are recorded. The cards are dated and generally in chronological order. However there are significant sections that are not; for this reason item records only list the years covered by each grouping of data sheets.
