Summary

This collection includes the journals, species notes, and field catalogs Charles O. Handley documenting his work with birds and mammals, 1935-1992. This covers much of his career-long collecting including his time at the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology, work for the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Smithsonian. Field books document work in Virginia and the southeast United States, Michigan, the Arctic and Canada with the U.S. Navy 1946-1949, the Blue Dolphin Labrador Expedition (1950), Guatemala (1947), and Panama (1957-1992) including expeditions to Bocas del Toro. Journals are detailed and describe a wide variety of information relating to collecting events, personal and professional observations, and daily life in the field. Journals for work in Panama often include information about Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and contemporary Panamanian events. There is a gap in the Panama journals from 1987-1991.
