Summary

This accession consists of one drawing and one oversize photograph of bison. They are associated with plate II (head of bull buffalo) and Plate VII (bull buffalo, rear view) in William T. Hornaday's The Extermination of the American Bison. The images in the book published in 2002 (and the 1887 Annual Report to the Regents on which it is based, published in 1889) are engravings which had appeared earlier in Cosmopolitan Magazine. One is attributed to Frederick Juengling. It is likely that the two drawings to be studies for the engravings, depicting one of the six animals in Hornaday's exhibit.
