Summary

This collection contains 13 field books created by Robert Kennicott, originally maintained by the National Museum of Natural History, Division of Birds. These items contain notes on birds and mammals collected in Canada and Alaska between the years of 1859 and 1866. An inventory list for these items contains the following information regarding the context in which these notes were created: "Kennicott made his first expedition to Arctic America in 1859-1862. During that period he explored the area as far north as Fort Yukon in what is now Manitoba and western Ontario, and collected specimens for the Smithsonian, the University of Michigan, the Chicago Audubon Society, and the Chicago Academy of Sciences. The explorations and collections are well documented in the Annual Reports for the period. He was greatly aided in his work by the officers and agents of the Hudson's Bay Company. Kennicott persuaded many men including James Lockhart and his assistant Strachen Jones to collect for the Smithsonian." Field notes that are undated are assumed to have been created between 1859 and 1866, the years in which Kennicott collected in the region.
