U.S. National Bureau of Standards director Edward Uhler Condon (1902-1974); U.S. Senator Brien McMahon (1903-1952); U.S. Representative Helen Gahagan Douglas (1900-1980); Harvard College Observatory astronomer Harlow Shapley (1885-1972); and William Hammatt Davis (1879-1964), former Chairman of the War Labor Board, at an event sponsored by Science Service. In late 1945, Senator McMahon was developing the Atomic Energy Act of 1945, which established the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
