This accession consists of materials documenting the professional career of theoretical astrophysicist George B. Field. Field's research interests include turbulent motion, dyanamo theory, public space policy, and the history and future of astronomy. In addition to serving as a visiting professor at many universities, Field has taught at Princeton University, 1957-1965; University of California, Berkeley, 1965-1972; and Harvard University, 1972- . Field also served as Director of both the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) from 1973 through 1982. CfA is a collaboration between SAO and Harvard College Observatory. Upon resigning from his directorships, Field took the position of Senior Research Fellow at SAO and continued to teach at Harvard. Materials include correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, reprints of Field's papers, lecture materials, research files, biographical materials, notes, calculations, and related materials.
