Summary

Consists of the subject files of the Office of the Director during the tenures of James R. Buckler, 1973-1988; Kathryn Meehan, Acting Director, 1989-1992; Nancy J. Bechtol, Chief, 1993-2002; and Barbara Faust, Associate Director, 2004-2013, and Director, 2014-2019. These materials document their work as director and their relationship with other offices and museums throughout the Smithsonian Institution, their involvement in exhibitions and special events, their work with professional associations, and their management of budget and staff. In addition the materials document horticultural programs and activities, landscape design and architecture for the Smithsonian, and the implementation of policies and the creation of programs that fulfill the mission of the Smithsonian. Smithsonian Gardens was known as the Office of Horticulture from 1976 to 1992, which was within the Office of Museum Programs. In 1992, the Office of Horticulture was became the Horticulture Services Division within the Office of Physical Plant, and in 2002 part of the Office of Facilities Management, which itself came to be known as the Office of Facilities Mangement and Reliability. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, notes; reports, lecture papers and slide presentation scripts; budget summaries; agreements; fundraising information; press releases; photographs and negatives; proposals; organizational charts; exhibition scripts, schedules, design and floor plans; visitor comments; invitations; tour information; policy and guidelines; newspaper clippings; conference, seminar, workshop, and tour information; book reviews; brochures; pamphlets; video recordings; flyers; newslettters; and architectural drawings. Some materials are in electronic format.
