Summary

This accession consists of administrative and exhibition files of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), Office of Exhibitions, dating from 1974 to 1993. The administrative files include documentation of the rehanging and shifting of collection objects; public requests for object photographs; memoranda from NPG staff and SI administration; and a chronological correspondence file, consisting mostly of public inquiries. The records also document the "Recent Acquisitions" exhibition series, which is curated by the Office of Exhibitions with suggestions by other curatorial staff. New exhibitions are mounted roughly every six months. The files are arranged chronologically, and consist mostly of memoranda between curatorial staff regarding the choice of objects, the conservation and preparation of objects for mounting, and label text.
