  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. • The National Science Resources Center was established as a joint enterprise of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies in 1985. Its creation was a response to critical problems in science education in American elementary and secondary schools identified in the report, "A Nation at Risk" in 1983. It is solely dedicated to formal K-12 education. In 2012 the center changed its name to the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) to reflect its mission to transform K-12 education through science in collaboration with communities around the globe. To achieve their goals the SSEC works to promote authentic, inquiry-based K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teaching and learning; to ensure diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in K-12 STEM education; and to advance STEM education for sustainable development.
  • Douglas M. Lapp served as executive director from 1985 until about 1998 and was succeeded by Sally Goetz Schuler, who served c. 1999-2012. Tom Emrick was executive director from 2013-2014.
