Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • The Computer Services Center was created from the Office of the Registrar in 1985. The center is in charge of the Museum's Information Resource Management Program. Its responsibilities include operation and maintenance of the central computer system, network, and software applications; service to end users in the museum; and introduction or guidance in use of various technologies in support of the museum's programs.
  • The Computer Services Center reported to the museum's Associate Director for Administrative and Automation Services. From 1985 to 1995, Dennis S. Dickinson served as Chief. After a hiatus during 1996 and 1997 Brad Howard served as Chief, 1998. By 1999 the Chief position was vacant and by 2002, it appears that the Computer Services Center was renamed the Technology Services Center with Rick Luhrs as Chief Technology Officer. The center is part of the Office of Management and Museum Services and provides design, implementation, and support services for computers, networks, audio-visual and data-information systems used by the museum.
