- The Office of the Coordinator of Public Information was created in 1977 to manage public relations at the Institution. The Office of Public Affairs, the Office of Special Events and Conference Services, and the Office of Congressional Liaison were placed under its jurisdiction.
- The office reported to the Secretary. Lawrence E. Taylor served as Coordinator of Public Information from 1977 until his retirement due to illness in 1984, when the office was abolished.
