Guide to the Smithsonian Archives, 1996
The Office of the Smithsonian Chemist seems to have been created in 1877. It was abolished in 1884. Prior to 1877 the Institution maintained a chemical laboratory of sorts, relying on the services of chemists who exchanged their services for use of the equipment. Frederick W. Taylor served as Smithsonian Chemist, 1877-1884. Most of the Chemist's work dealt with inorganic analysis.
