  • The National Museum of Natural History appointed an individual with special responsibility for educational programs, the Education Coordinator, in 1974. The position was retitled as the Supervisory Information and Education Specialist, 1980, and as Assistant Director for Education, 1987. The Office of Education plans, coordinates and conducts numerous Museum activities for students, teachers, families and the general public. As part of this effort the Office operates three hands-on learning centers, the Discovery Room, the O. Orkin Insect Zoo, and the Naturalist Center. The Naturalist Center opened in 1995 and closed in 2011. The Discovery Room closed in 2013 when a new education lab opened at the museum called Q?rius. The office changed its name to the Office of Education and Outreach and then in around 2018 the office was renamed the Office of Education, Outreach, and Visitor Experience.
