  • A Safety Division within the Office of Protection Services was organized into a separate Office of Safety Programs in 1986. It then reorganized into the Office of Environmental Management and Safety in 1987. Sometime before 2008 the office changed its name to the Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management. Prior to the establishment of the Office of Safety Programs, environmental management, safety, and health (i.e. energy conservation, fire protection, accident prevention, occupational safety and health) were conducted by the Office of Protection Services, and to a lesser extent by the Office of Plant Services. The Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management reports to Smithsonian Facilities (formerly the Office of Facilties Services and later the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations).
  • The Director, Office of Safety Programs was Edward R. Sniechoski, 1986, who then served as Special Assistant, Office of Environmental Management and Safety for about one year. F. William Billingsley was appointed Director of the Office of Environmental Management and Safety in 1987. In 2014, Richard Wright, Jr. started as Director of the Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management.
  • The function of the Office of Environmental Management and Safety is to oversee and ensure safety, fire protection, environmental management, and health services for the whole Smithsonian Institution.
