Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • The post of Executive Assistant to the Director was created in 1978 to oversee administrative and financial programs and policies and other special projects assigned to it by the Director of the Freer Gallery of Art. The job title changed to Assistant Director, Administration in 1980. After a reorganization in the early 1990s, management of administrative and financial tasks split. From 1991 to 1999, Executive Assistant to the Director, Toni C. Lake, oversaw administrative tasks of the galleries. In about 1995, a Financial Officer position was created. In about 2002, these two units again merged to form Assistant Director, Finance and Administration. The Assistant Director, Finance and Administration reports to the Office of the Director.
  • Richard Louie was the Executive Assistant to the Director, 1978-1980, and Assistant Director, Administration, 1980-1984. In 1984, Louie became Assistant Director, Freer Gallery of Art. [NOTE: Richard Louie, from 1978 forward, could be construed alternately as the Assistant Director, Freer Gallery of Art; as he was the only assistant to the director before the Sackler Gallery came into being. See Associate Director, of which Assistant Director of the Freer was the predecessor, below for a description of that office.] Sarah Newmeyer took the role of administrator until 1995. From about 1995 to 1997, she then served as a financial manager. In 1997, Glennel Cooper became the Chief Financial Officer and served in this capacity until about 2000. In 2001, Sue Nichols became Assistant Director, Finance and Administration.
  • The Assistant Director, Finance and Administration oversees the gallery shops, personnel, and reception work at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
