- The Office of Fellowships was first organized as the Office of Fellowships and Grants in 1978, which was formed from the former Office of Academic Studies and the Foreign Currency Program. The Office of Fellowships and Grants was renamed the Office of Fellowships in 2001. In 2006 the Office of Fellowships changed its title to the Office of Research Training and Services but several years later, in 2008, the title of Office of Fellowships was reinstated because it better reflected the core activities of the office and its role as a focal point for research fellowships. In 2011 the Office of Fellowships was renamed the Office of Fellowships and Internships, which has the central management and administrative responsibility for the Institution's fellowship and internship programs, and other scholarly appointments. It seeks to facilitate the Smithsonian's relations with students and scholars at universities, museums and research institutions around the world. The Office reported to the Deputy Under Secretary for Collections and Interdisciplinary Support. In 2021, the Office of Fellowships and Internships was split into two separate offices, the Office of Fellowships and the Office of Internship Programs.
