Agency History

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. • The National Museum of American History has long been interested in the study of the changing social and cultural character of American life as reflected in the medium of advertising. In 1989 the Center for Advertising History was formally created. It sponsored symposia, exhibitions, and publications on the history of American advertising and important figures in that field. Because of inadequate private support the Center was closed in about 1994.
  • Stacy Flaherty served as Director from 1989 to 1993. Tom Wiener succeeded her, 1993-1994.
  • For a history of the larger creating unit, refer to "Forms part of" above.
