Notes
- This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

- The Department of Biological Programs was established in 1990. It presides over the animal exhibit departments/teams and research on animal studies, including reintroduction of animals to the wild; animal behavior and breeding; and endangered species intervention. In 2002 the unit became the Department of Animal Programs. Benjamin B. Beck chaired the department, 1990-2002, and was succeeded by William X. Zanten, Jr., as general curator and department head, 2003-2006. In 2007, Ed Bronikowski, served as associate curator and head of the department. Bronikowski then became senior curator in 2008 and served until 2016 when the Department of Animal Programs appears to have been abolished.
- For a history of the larger creating unit, refer to "Forms part of " above.
