- The Affiliations Program was created in 1999 as a national outreach initiative of the Smithsonian. It establishes long-term collaborative relationships with communities across the country. These partnerships allow the Institution to share is collections, programming, and expertise more widely with local museums and educational organizations. J. Michael Carrigan directed the Affiliations Program, 1999-2002; Harold A. Closter, 2004-2017; and Myriam A. Springuel, Interim Director, 2017, and Director, 2018- .
