- The Office of the Treasurer began as the Office of the Accountant and Disbursing Agent in 1905. As Accountant of the Smithsonian Institution the incumbent was responsible for the Smithsonian's private funds. As Disbursing Agent he was responsible for the federal funds appropriated to the United States National Museum and any other federal funds the Smithsonian received. In 1929 the position was named the Office of the Treasurer and Disbursing Agent. The present title has been used since 1940. As the Smithsonian's private endowment has grown over the years, the Treasurer has focused his attention on private funds. At present the Treasurer, along with the Investment Policy Committee, develops investment policy recommendations. These are implemented by outside money management firms employed for the purpose and monitored by the Treasurer. In late 2013 the Office of the Treasurer became part of the Office of Finance and Accounting.
- W. I. Adams was Accountant and Disbursing Agent, 1905-1924, and was succeeded by Nicholas Dorsey. Dorsey's title became Treasurer and Disbursing Agent, 1929-1940, and Treasurer, 1940-1947. J. D. Howard followed Dorsey, 1948-1954; T. F. Clark, 1955-1959; Edgar L. Roy, 1960-1964; Otis O. Martin, 1965; Betty J. Morgan, Assistant Treasurer, 1966-1968; T. Ames Wheeler, 1969-1978; Christian Hohenlohe, 1979-1984; and Ann R. Levin, 1987-1990. The Office was apparently vacant in 1991; and Sudeep Anand served, 1992-2013.
