Summary

Consists of records documenting the correspondence of the Director and other officials as well as general correspondence during the tenures of William Temple Hornaday, Superintendent, 1889-1890; Frank Baker, Acting Manager, 1890-1893, and Superintendent, 1893-1916; Ned Hollister, Superintendent, 1916-1924; Alexander Wetmore, Superintendent, 1924-1925; William M. Mann, Superintendent, 1925-1926, and Director, 1926-1956; and Theodore H. Reed, Acting Director, 1956-1958, and Director, 1958-1983. Materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence, annual reports, a sample of correspondence index cards, and letter registers for the main incoming correspondence file, 1887-1900.
