Consists of records documenting the administration of the Smithsonian American Art Museum during the tenures of Directors William Henry Holmes, 1907-1932; Ruel P. Tolman, Acting Director, 1932-1945, and Director, 1946-1948; Thomas M. Beggs, 1948-1964; David W. Scott, 1965-1969; Robert Tyler Davis (interim), 1969; Joshua Charles Taylor, 1970-1981; Harry Lowe (acting), 1981-1982; Charles C. Eldredge, 1982-1988; and Elizabeth Broun, 1989-2016. Some materials date to when the museum was known at the National Gallery of Art, the National Collection of Fine Arts, and the National Museum of American Art. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, proposals, reports, floor plans, schedules, architectural drawings, clippings, meeting agendas and minutes, budget records, images, brochures, clippings, and informational materials organized into subject files concerning Smithsonian, non-Smithsonian, and Smithsonian American Art Museum departments, associations, affiliations, committees, and organizations. Some materials are in electronic format.
