Notes
- This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.
- Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, 1977
- The James Smithson Society is the Institution's premier membership program and was organized in 1977 to encourage and recognize major gifts to the Smithsonian Institution.
- The program seems not to have had a specially assigned manger until Neill Heath was appointed Program Manager in 1990. He was succeeded by Fern Segerlind, 1991-1993, and Holly Dell Shaheen, later named Holly Dell Tyler, 1994- . Laura Brouse-Long, has served as Director, since 2000- . Apparently the program reported to the Associate Director for Marketing and Membership, 1995- .
- For a history of the larger creating unit, refer to "Forms part of " above.
