Agency History

Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.
  • Guide to the Smithsonian Archives, 1996
  • The Department of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture had its origins in the appointment of Adelyn D. Breeskin as a Special Consultant in the field of contemporary art in 1964. In 1967 a Department of Contemporary Art was established. In 1970 its name was changed to Contemporary Painting and Sculpture and then to Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture in 1974. In 1984 the Departments of Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Painting and Sculpture and Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture were merged into a restored Department of Painting and Sculpture.
  • Staff of the Department of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture included Adelyn Dohme Breeskin, Special Consultant, 1964, Acting Curator, 1967, Curator, 1968-1974, and Senior Curatorial Advisor, 1974-1984; Walter Hopps, Curator, 1974-1977, and Adjunct Curator, 1977; Harry Rand, Associate Curator, 1977-1978, Chair, 1978, and Curator, 1979-1984; Virginia M. Mecklenburg, Associate Curator, 1979-1984; and Lynda Roscoe Hartigan, Assistant Curator, 1976-1984.
