Agency History

To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • Cultural history as a category of historical studies at the Smithsonian has applied to different levels of organization at different times. In 1994 as a result of major reorganization in the National Museum of American History a Division of Cultural History was created as one element of a new Department of History. It includes such fields as ethnic studies, sports, popular culture, music, painting and sculpture, and theater and film. James Merle Weaver was Chairman, 1995-1997, succeeded by Ramunas Kondratas, 1998, and Rex M. Ellis, 1999- . The Division of Cultural History was renamed the Division of Culture and the Arts, with the addition of graphic arts and photographic history, in October 2009.
