  • The Center for Earth and Planetary Studies (CEPS) is a scientific research unit within the Collections and Research Department of the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. CEPS performs original research and outreach activities on topics covering planetary science, terrestrial geophysics, and the remote sensing of environmental change.
  • CEPS was established in 1974 as part of a formal program of research at the Museum. At the same time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) transferred its collection of lunar and scientific maps and photographs to CEPS.
  • Farouk El-Baz, a lunar geologist and a member of the International Astronomical Union Taskgroup for Lunar Nomenclature, was appointed first Research Director in 1974, and served in that capacity until 1982. In 1982 Ted A. Maxwell was named Acting Research Director. He then held the title of Chair, 1983-1988. Thomas R. Watters later served as acting Chair from 1989 until about 1998. Bruce A. Campbell has served as Chair, 1998-2002. James R. Zimbelman was Chair, 2002-2006; followed by John A. Grant, Chair, 2007-2010; Bruce A. Campbell, Chair, 2015-2019; and Rossman P. Irwin, III, Chair, 2019- .
