Summary

Consists of records documenting the administrative activities associated with the Smithsonian Council. The Council was established in 1966 by Secretary S. Dillon Ripley with the approval of the Board of Regents. The Council is composed of twenty-five members who have distinguished themselves in the arts, sciences, and other fields. It advises the Secretary on programmatic endeavors and provides guidance on the progress of research and public education within and outside the Smithsonian Institution. Records were maintained by James M. Young, 1966-1991; and Neil G. Kotler, 1991- . Materials include correspondence and memoranda documenting activities of the Council; research funding information; biographical information on current and potential members; Council history, charter, and reports; meeting agenda and minutes; and budget summaries.
