Consists of records documenting activities of the office during the tenures of Directors Charles Nagel (1964-1969), Marvin S. Sadik (1969-1981), Alan Maxwell Fern (1982-2000), and Marc Pachter (2000-2007). Topics include: cultural affairs, exhibitions, legislation, special events, facilities, symposia, budget, donation, management, copyright, and grants. The records also document the museum's relations with the National Museum of American Art (formerly the National Collection of Fine Arts) and other Smithsonian bureaus.
