Consists of records documenting activities of the office during the tenures of Directors Charles Nagel (1964-1969), Marvin S. Sadik (1969-1981), Alan Maxwell Fern (1982-2000), and Marc Pachter (2000-2007). Topics include: cultural affairs, exhibitions, legislation, special events, facilities, symposia, budget, donation, management, copyright, and grants. The records also document the museum's relations with the National Museum of American Art (formerly the National Collection of Fine Arts) and other Smithsonian bureaus. Information about the museum's interactions with professional art organizations, such as the American Association of Museums and the Association of Art Museum Directors, is also included. Materials include reports, correspondence, color photographs, color transparencies, color negatives, black-and-white photographs, black-and-white transparencies, black-and-white negatives, travel records, lists, meeting minutes, brochures, catalogs, proposals, policies, procedures, memoranda, notes, newsletters, read files, invitations, cards, clippings, compact discs, digital versatile discs, videotapes, audiotapes and schedules. Some records predate the existence of the office and some materials are in electronic format.
