Consists of records documenting departmental business of the Department of Zoology under Head Curators Waldo L. Schmitt, 1947-1957; Herbert Friedmann, 1957-1961; Fenner Albert Chace, Acting Head Curator, 1961-1962; and Horton Holcombe Hobbs, 1962-1964. Records dated prior to 1947 document the activities of the Department's predecessor office, the Department of Biology, under Head Curators Frederick William True, 1897-1911; Leonhard Stejneger, 1911-1943; and Waldo L. Schmitt, 1943-1947. Materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence. Correspondents include vertebrate and invertebrate zoologists, administrators and staff of the Smithsonian and the Museum, and the general public.
