Consists of records documenting scientific projects carried out by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Projects include: Atomic and Molecular Physics projects; Celescope Project; Comet studies; Earth Physics projects; Historical Astronomy projects; Infrared projects; Intercomparison projects; Lunar and Planetary studies; Meteor projects; Meteorites and Cosmic Dust projects; Mount Hopkins Observatory; Multiple-Mirror Telescope Project; National Geodetic Satellite Program; Satellite Geodesy Program; and Satellite Tracking Program; Theoretical Astrophysics projects. These records were maintained by Charles A. Lundquist. A small amount of material predates Lundquist's appointment as Assistant Director (Science) in 1962. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, teletype messages, project proposals, reports, photographs, publications, and newspaper clippings.
