Summary

This series consists of correspondence documenting the activities of the Office of the Director of National Air and Space Museum during the tenures of Philip S. Hopkins, 1958-1964; S. Paul Johnston, 1964-1969; Michael Collins, 1971-1978; Melvin B. Zisfein (Acting), 1978-1979; Noel W. Hinners, 1979-1982; Walter J. Boyne, 1982-1986; Donald S. Lopez (Acting), 1986, 1995, and 1999; James C. Tyler (Acting), 1986-1987; Martin Harwit, 1987-1995; Donald Davenport Engen, 1996-1999; John R. Dailey, 2000-2018; and Ellen Stofan, 2018-2021. Some materials were created within the Office of the Deputy Director. Records dated prior to 1946 were created by the United States National Museum and records created between 1946 and 1966 were created by the National Air Museum. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, agendas, brochures, clippings, background materials, images, invitations, and related materials.
