Summary

Consists of records documenting management of the United States National Museum specimen collections under Assistant Secretaries G. Brown Goode, 1881-1896, including the years 1881-1887 when he served as Assistant Director of the Museum without the title of Assistant Secretary; Charles D. Walcott, Acting Assistant Secretary, 1897-1898; and Richard Rathbun, 1897-1918. Materials include correspondence from the National Museum to persons who sent in specimens for examination and receipts from the National Museum for specimens loaned or given to individuals and institutions.
