Notes

  • Axel Leonard Melander (1878-1962) was born in Illinois. He developed an interest in insects together with his friend, Charles T. Brues, and both studied entomology at the University of Texas. From 1904 to 1926, he taught entomology at Washington Agricultural College (now Washington State University) and then moved to the College of the City of New York, where he remained until his retirement in 1943. Melander worked in both pure and applied entomology and gathered a large collection of Diptera, now in the Smithsonian.
