Summary

This record unit consists of administrative files of the Smithsonian Archives, primarily during the tenures of Samuel T. Surratt, Archivist, 1965-1968, and Richard H. Lytle, Archivist, 1969-1981. The records concern budgets, exhibitions, committees, equipment, microfilming, records management, professional organizations, workshops, and space needs. Of special interest are materials documenting the establishment of the Joseph Henry Papers Project, the Office of the Registrar microfilming project, the 1971 and 1978 Guide to the holdings of the Smithsonian Archives, and Lytle correspondence with the National Archives concerning Smithsonian records. Also included are Smithsonian Archives annual reports, 1969-1982, and Smithsonian records surveys undertaken by the National Archives, 1951, 1962, 1964, 1966-1968.
