The U.S. Senate passes the act organizing the Smithsonian Institution, which President James K. Polk signs into law. Provisions of the Organic Act include a “suitable” building with rooms for the “reception and arrangement” of natural history objects, a library, and an art gallery. Other provisions state that all objects of art and natural history belonging to the United States should be transferred to and held within the Smithsonian.
