Some of the collectors were found in the collection description for RU 189, Assistant Secretary in charge of the United States National Museum, Correspondence and Memoranda, 1860-1908, as found in SIRIS.

A keyword search on the last names of those scientists mentioned in the description for RU 189 was used to find additional records held at the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

Additional collectors are mentioned in Smithsonian Institution Annual Reports, 1878-1918. The "Explorations and Researches" section in the Secretary's report from 1878-1900, and the reports of the United States National Museum, the Bureau of American Ethnology and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory were also searched. Within each Annual Report, the report of the Board of Regents, the donations to the National Zoological Park and the accession report of the United States National Museum were occasionally checked, and those searches are noted. The Annual Report tables of contents were used to determine the relevancy of reports published in the appendices.

The Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology in the Annual Report was systematically checked only after 1900. Pre-1900 Ethological field research included in this guide consist only of expeditions mentioned in the "Explorations and Researches" section of the Secretary's report, as noted above. Further information on specific projects or scientists can be found in the reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology, which give extensive accounts of the activities of ethnologists under its employ.

Further information on collectors can also be found in field note collections housed in the National Museum of Natural History, Divisions of Mammals, Birds, and Fishes.
