The ship sailed for New York on January 7, 1904 carrying Smithsonian Regent Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel and James Smithson's remains. Notified that the cemetery, where Smithson was buried, near Genoa, Italy was to be destroyed, Smithsonian Regent Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel went to Italy to oversee the exhumation of Smithson's remains and their transfer to Washington, D.C..
