On January 23, 1964, the Smithsonian's new Museum of History and Technology, now known as the National Museum of American History, opens to the public and on the first weekend, some 54,000 visitors viewed the new museum. The halls opened included the Flag Hall, First Ladies' Hall, and the halls of Everyday Life in the American Past, American Costume, Farm Machinery, Light Machinery, Tools, Vehicles, Railroads, as well as a temporary exhibition presenting examples of exhibits to be installed in other halls of the building. The building was dedicated by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 22, 1964.
