Alexander Wetmore is elected the sixth Secretary on 12 January 1945 by the Board of Regents and serves a seven year term from 1945 to1952. A noted ornithologist, he had been associated with the Institution since 1924, when he served for a short time as director of the National Zoological Park. He had also served as Assistant Secretary in charge of the U.S. National Museum.
