Mary Agnes Chase, botanist with the United States Department of Agriculture and honorary curator of the Grass Herbarium at the United States National Herbarium, Smithsonian Institution, is on horseback in front of a wood hut on an expedition in Brazil in 1929, to collect grass specimens. She wears a large sun hat and gazes at a second horse carrying supplies. In the background, several huts made from logs can be seen. Mary Agnes Chase was a feminist and botanist specializing in the study of grasses.
