Ceiling of the Children's Room in the South Tower of the Smithsonian Institution Building, c. 1901. The ceiling was designed by Grace Lincoln Temple, one of the first women interior designers to work in the area of public buildings, and features a naturalistic leaf-covered trellis with birds peering down onto the visitors. The room was conceived by Secretary Samuel P. Langley in order to inspire children in the study of the natural world.
