Summary

Aerial view of the Mall taken from the Washington Monument looking towards the Capitol. On the right is the United States Department of Agriculture Building (built in 1868 and razed in 1930) and the greenhouses with the formal gardens in front of the Agriculture Building with a pair of embellished neoclassical pavilions; the Smithsonian Institution Building or "The Castle" and the United States National Museum Building, now known as the Arts and Industries Building. Note that at this time the Mall is covered with trees. Just beyond the Arts and Industries Buildings, is the Army Medical Museum (1887-razed 1969 and now occupied by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden), and then the Armory Building (1825-razed 1964 and where the National Air and Space Museum is now located). Visible to the left of the Mall is the Center Market on Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues between 7th and 9th Streets, N.W. In the distance is the United States Capitol. Right in front of the Capitol in the trees is the roof of the Botanic Garden building.
