John Varden (c. 1790-1865), proprietor of the Washington City Museum and later curator for the National Institute for the Promotion of Science, sits looking down. These collections formed the core of the Smithsonian's museum. Varden advocated using Smithson's bequest for a museum but was never actually employed by the Institution.
