Dr. William H. Holmes, first curator of the National Gallery of Art (NGA), now known as the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), right, chats with (from left to right) George B. Chittenden, William H. Jackson and Story B. Ladd at the Mall entrance of the Natural History Building (NHB). The Washington Monument is in the background on the left. The men were all members of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, 1871-1877, also known as the Hayden Survey.
