Engraving of Hugh Smithson (1714-1786) after a pastel by Hugh Douglas Hamilton. Hugh Smithson, a.k.a Hugh Percy, First Duke of Northumberland and father of James Smithson. This is a copy of the original portrait received as part of Smithson's estate and which is housed in the James Smithson Collection, Division of Political History, National Museum of American History.
