The Harriet Lane Johnston Collection in the National Collection of Fine Arts, now the National Museum of American Art, in the Natural History Building, March 11, 1952. Paintings and a bust on exhibit in the southwest corner and there is a canvas on a table. Mrs. Johnston, niece of James Buchanan, left her entire collection to the United States government to encourage them to establish in Washington a national gallery of art. Following her example, the gallery attracted gifts from other collectors.
